Thousands of years ago, one of the world's greatest civilizations grew along the Nile River in Egypt. The Egyptians were famous builders. They constructed enormous pyramids as tombs for their kings, who were called pharaohs. The largest, the Great Pyramid of Giza, was made from more than two million heavy stone blocks, each moved and stacked by hand. The Egyptians also invented a form of writing using pictures called hieroglyphs. Much of what we know about them comes from these ancient carvings.
